Kelly Liew



Kelly studied vocal performance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the renowned vocalist Ella Kiang, Professor Michael Rippon and David Qua. She obtained her Master of Music, Bachelor of Music (Honours) and Professional Diploma for Performing Arts from the Academy.

Kelly has made her operatic Prima Donna debut as Marenka in The Bartered Bride by Smetana, and involved in Puccini's opera Le Villi and J.Rousseau's opera Le Devin du Village in the Academy's productions; she also took the roles of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte by Mozart, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss, Adina in L'elisir d'amore by Donizetti, Gianetta in The Gondoliers by W. S. Gilbert in productions presented by the Ella Kiang Singers.

She has won numerous prizes in singing competitions both internationally and locally, including Champion in the 52nd Miss Barbara Fei Vocal Scholarship (open), First Runner-up in the 2001 Singapore and Malaysia Vocal Competition, and Performance Prize in the 2004 China International Chinese Voice Vocal Competition. 

She is the recipient of several scholarships at the Academy, including the Bloomberg Scholarship, the Investec Music Prizes, the Peter and Nancy Thompson Scholarship and the Society of APA Non-Local Scholar ships. She has attended the 2003 Aspen Music Festival and School (USA) with grant from the Asian Cultural Council and the Lady Ivy Fung Memorial Music Fellowship. There she studied with the renowned tenor Vinson Cole.

Recently, she has been frequently invited to perform in concerts held in East Asia, Europe and Hong Kong, and teaching in those places. She is now teaching at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong International Institute of Music, Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus, VANNAT International Children's Choir and Pak Ling Music society (Malaysia).
